Competition: 2009 International Store Design Competition

The Retail Design Institute's 39th International Store Design Awards Gala took place the evening of Monday January 11th at the Times Center Stage in New York City. Two hundred of the retail design industry's top design talent, retailers, editors and vendors joined the Retail Design Institute as they recognized the top store designs from 2009. Emceed by Andrew McQuilkin, FRDI the Institute's International President, and visually presented in musically themed movies of the winners, the evening's presentations moved quickly forward as several representative of the organization presented, including Joseph Nevin, RDI of Bergmeyer Associates, Sharon Lessard, RDI of Supervalu, Brian Dyches, FRDI of Atmospheric, and George Homer,RDI of GH & Associates. Announced and awarded by Charles Sparks, RDI of Charles Sparks & Company with top honors for Store of the Year 2009 was The Hudson Bay Company - The Room, designed by Yabu Pushelberg. Other stores recognized for their outstanding achievements with first places included Zu+ Elements by Giorgio Borruso Design(specialty store under 1,500 sq. ft.), 225 Forest by Michael Neumann Architecture, LLC (specialty store 3,000-5,000 sq. ft.) , Sassoon by TPG Architecture, LLP (service retailers), Brown, Thomas & Co by Burdifilek (new or completely renovated full line department store) and West Marine by Chute Gerdeman (large format specialty store) Seven retail projects were also awarded the special "Innovation" award for the new ground and excellence they demonstrated in key disciplines related to store design. Projects included Spring Rolls - Fairview by dialogue 38, for lighting design, Christian Dior by Gensler for graphics, and Timberland- London, Westfield by Checkland Kindleysides for Green Design. The evening not only gave kudos to these great designers, retailers and their projects, it was a celebration of a fantastic year in retail design. It is truly the one time a year where the industry's peers get together, put aside their competitiveness, and join in commending each other for their accomplishments. This is the only retail design competition organized and judged solely by our peers. Congratulations to all the winners!
